The origin of the use of white sand can be found in the competition event. Birds are bred and inspected for size, posture and certainly also for color. Therefore, it is stipulated that the cages in which the birds are during the competition must be white on the inside and black on the outside. As ground covering in these cages, special white sand is even produced without shells, to prevent color mixing at exhibitions. The world top in bird breeding is located in Italy and the low countries, with Flanders as the main center. Referring to its use during the exhibitions, after the Second World War, the use of white sand was integrated into everyday use at home (previously newsprint was used at home). Currently, the daily use of white sand is most concentrated in the Netherlands and Limburg.
